Tango full speed and no more waiters that sacada the dancers 😉 . Claerchens Ballhaus milonga moved up a floor away from the Claerchens Ballhaus main business to the beautiful Spiegelsaal (engl. mirror hall) where baroque and Berlin vintage charme meet surrounded by 4m high mirrors. (Don’t worry about feeling like Alice, they are above head level.) Like the whole building the Mirror Hall is a product of the Gründerzeit (Wilhelminian era) at the end of the 19th century and its aesthetics. Singular in its preserved historical shape, the Mirror Hall is probably one of the very few places in Berlin which still show the signs of their history. The bygone splendour of the partially blind mirrors and the stucco under the high ceiling, the galantery of the reliefs and the shadowy loggia are all beeing revived when people gather again to dance tango here. The wooden sprung floor is easy on your feet but can be a bit sticky at times, so bring shoes with smooth leather soles. You might know it from its regular milonga on Wednesdays, the famous Cafe Dominguez on Sundays, or the tango marathon Oktoberfiesta that takes place here too. The Wednesdays milonga is a bit more intimate than Cafe Dominguez on Sundays; you can always catch a teacher or the owner Judith for a chat. Mala Junta offers a wooden parquet floor that is easy on dancers’ feet and ventilation keeps you cool throughout all the tandas you dance. There’s also a second room available for practising or dancing in a less crowded space. The bar offers selected wines, beers and non-alcoholic drinks at moderate prices.

Every third Thursday of the month there is a special edition of this milonga called “La Milonga Que Faltaba” with performances, a raffle, sometimes live music, and selected snacks.

Nou Mitte has presented national and international artists and DJs since 2011 at their renowned Friday milonga. It’s one of Europe’s “must-haves” for DJs as well as performers. The venue is equipped with an extra-ordinary phase one sound system your ears will love, a ventilation system, a wooden parquet floor, and a professional bar with probably the largest variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in the Berlin tango scene. Both Nou’s house DJs as well as international guests provide traditional tango music for you to dance every Friday.

The floor is a bit on the slippery end; so when in doubt, bring shoes with suede soles or a pair of sneakers. In summer, since this is a busy event, temperatures can get quite high in spite of the ventilation system.

Aaah, Strandbar – the milonga with the most “Berlin” feeling the city offers in summer. Come and dance next to the River spree and the famous Bode museum under the Berlin sky, have a pizza, or chill out with your friends and a few drinks. The floor is suitable for dance shoes (the way to the restrooms however is not) but rather sticky. The bar is equipped with wines, beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages to your liking but rather on the expensive side.

Beware of pickpocketing at all times! Strandbar is accessible by the general public and is frequented by organised groups of pickpockets as most Berlin city locations. Keep valuables close to your body. Leaving your bag at the DJ table DOES NOT provide any protection.

A variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are available at Berlin-Mitte tourist prices.

Oh, and of course they have a lovely ballroom in the back where one of the most established Berlin milongas takes place. The wooden sprung floor is just perfect. In summer it can get a little hot though as there is only little ventilation but you can always dash out for a quick refreshment and have one of their great wines and other beverages like a proper Berliner: On a bench in the street.

A variety of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks are available at Berlin-Mitte tourist prices.

Tangoloft is probably Berlin’s most beautiful tango venue. Since 2002 Mona & Henning have warmly welcomed tango dancers from all over the world to their intricately decorated place with the latest addition of a charming 1920s-style salon. For the first time, Tangoloft hosts the opening night for Embrace festival with both traditional music (main loft) as well as mixed tango music (second floor) to unite tango lovers of all tastes. The Embrace main acts will perform their welcome dances here.

Tangoloft provides selected wines, long drinks, and non-alcoholic beverages at fair prices. The wooden sprung floor is soft and will be renewed in March to provide you with a perfectly smooth surface for dancing. In the back there’s a closed smoker’s lounge with a hot stove to keep warm and cosy.

Car drivers: DO NOT park your car in the backyard under any circumstances, even though it seems empty or like nobody would care at night. The building owners will have you towed within no time and it’s really a rather expensive experience.

Ballhaus Rixdorf is one of Berlin’s oldest tango locations. Michael Ruehl started his famous Saturday milonga here in 1988 (until 2009). The venue also hosted numerous Berlin Tango festivals up to 2012 and was one of the few places where the entire tango scene met to party and dance. Alberto Podesta gave one of his last European performances here.

That being said, Ballhaus Rixdorf is not a pretty location: It’s interior with mostly plain white halls rather reflects on the rough charme of 1990s “Kreuzkoelln”. The choice of drinks is averagely priced yet small: Think along the lines of one white and one red wine, one beer, coke, apple juice, and mineral water. There is absolutely no ventilation and it does get super humid in there when lots of people fill the room. Some of the speakers were broken until last year (and for the last 10 years); perhaps they have been replaced now.

We have to issue a solid floor warning: The main hall on the first floor features an OSB flooring that is that sticky that you’re bound to ruin your knees every time you try to pivot. Bring your own baby powder from the drugstore, if you want to make sure you can actually dance in there. To make life more exciting, the second floor hall as well as the roof lounge are that slippery that you’ll feel like you’re ice-skating. Since the exact hall has not been announced yet, be prepared for extreme conditions of both sorts.

Spreefeld Tango is an integrative event for people with and without disabilities who love dancing argentine tango. It takes place either at the charming boathouse* (hardwood floor, a bit rugged)  or the community hall (wooden parquet tiles). Coffee and cake are available for free. Donations are appreciated. Spreefeld tango is organised by Pinel gGmbh in cooperation with Nou Tango Berlin. Berlin tango teachers and DJs such as Thomas Rieser, Lilia & Jens-Christian, Maria Mondino, Claudia & Karl, Rene Löffler, Daniela Schulz, and Carlos Vallejos have supported the project.

Practica: 15-16:00 for people with and without handicaps

*Kindly note that the boathouse is only accessible by stepping down some stairs. If you use a wheelchair or if this is an obstacle to you for other reasons, the team will help you in.

    Strandbar (M&M edition)

    Berlin-Mitte
Hosted by: Gaia, Francesco, Don Kinese
Entrance fee: Please donate 4 €
    • milonga
    • trad

Aaah, Strandbar – the milonga with the most “Berlin” feeling the city offers in summer. Come and dance next to the River spree and the famous Bode museum under the Berlin sky, have a pizza, or chill out with your friends and a few drinks. The floor is suitable for dance shoes but rather sticky. The way to the restrooms however is an “interesting challenge” in high heels. The bar is equipped with wines, beers, cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages to your liking but rather on the expensive side. But then nobody keeps you from bringing your own bottle. DJs on Sundays: Don Kinese, Gaia, Francesco

Beware of pickpocketing at all times! Strandbar is accessible by the general public and is frequented by organised groups of pickpockets as one of Berlin’s tourist attractions. Keep valuables close to your body. Leaving your bag at the DJ table DOES NOT provide any protection.

This event takes place every week on Sunday
